Tenet was one of my most anticipated movies of the year and one that I had been keeping tabs on for years now. I first learned of this project shortly after the release of Christopher Nolan's 2017 film Dunkirk. Back in 2017, all that was reported about this movie was that Christopher Nolan wanted to dip his feet in a spy thriller type movie. Earlier this year after the release of the first trailer, many expected Nolan's newest movie to be the summers biggest blockbuster. Unfortunately due to the Coronavirus pandemic the film was moved from its initial July 17th release date to September 3rd here in the states. For someone like me, it may as well have been a lifetime. The anticipation for this movie was at a all time high. Well, I can say that I have seen Tenet and... it was really good... and a lot to take in.
The best thing about Tenet to me was I didn't feel like I was watching actors act, but that I was watching characters who may as well of been real people. The other thing I loved was the story and concept. Leave it to Christopher Nolan to give us a film that will require multiple viewings to fully understand what he just gave us. I can't think of any actor/actress in this movie that didn't do at least a good job. The stars of the movie John David Washington and Robert Pattinson stole the show for me. Every second they were on screen I wasn't only invested, I was glued to the screen. These two are surely some of the best in the business right now. Kenneth Branagh who plays the movies villain is also very good. He is menacing and cunning. Besides the acting, Christopher Nolan has done it again with taking a concept that is inconceivable to most and not only creating a well filmed movie but an exciting one at that. Tenet is filled with action that is jaw dropping, concepts that have never been done before and most importantly a great film that will require more then one viewing.
Now as far as negatives go I did have two minor issues. Again, I loved this film. I think this will go down as one of Nolan's best. Am I nitpicking? Maybe, but one issue I had I feel many will have as well. There are a few continuity issues with this film towards the end. The film sets up something that has rules to it and if you pay close attention during the last thirty minutes you will notice a few of these rules being broken. Now for me, I noticed it instantly. Is it a big deal or did it ruin the movie for me? Most certainly not, but it is extremely noticeable in my opinion. The other issue isn't really a problem for me. The main issue I see audiences having is missing key plot details. Tenet is very fast paced and Christopher Nolan expects you to be paying attention. If you are distracted or leave the film even for just one scene, you will have probably missed a key piece of information that could make the movie confusing. I liken this to other movies like this such as Interstellar or Inception. If you are okay with seeing Tenet multiple times then you should be good. I plan on seeing "Tenet" multiple times to see everything that I had missed before but not everyone is like that.
Tenet is truly a force to be reckoned with and the summers biggest film. The story was captivating and the action was amazing to see. There are so many scenes that will just leave your jaw on the floor, and I can't wait to see this again. This film is only worth seeing, but is worth seeing multiple times.
