'Godzilla vs Kong': Film Review

From the dawn of time, man has always wondered who would win between a giant ape and a 50ft Lizard. Well, the time has finally come to answer this great mystery and what better way then to watch it on the big screen? With all jokes aside, Godzilla vs Kong is finally out in theaters (where they are open) and HBOMax. Already this film is drawing major attention but is it any good? I think it depends on what you are looking for. I'll tell you right now, if you are solely interested in seeing a good monster fight that will make you pound your chest like Kong, then this is the movie for you. If you are looking for a movie with a rich story and character development.. I'd skip this one. At least in my opinion.

With all that said though, let us get right to the great things about this movie. First off, wow how about those fights? I personally have never been craving for a King Kong vs Godzilla showdown as I didn't quite understand how it would work. Let me tell ya, I was completely wrong. The action sequences are incredible and Director Adam Wingard did a great job at showcasing this. Watching Kong and Godzilla fight is almost like watching a UFC match. The grand scale of the monsters only add to the beauty that unfolds. With that, the visuals like it's previous film Godzilla: King of the Monsters is absolutely phenomenal. The vision that unfolds in front of us is exactly what most fans are hoping to see. A grand spectacle unfolding in front of our eyes featuring these two giants throwing punches for over an hour and a half.

As awesome and adrenaline rushing as the showdown between these two gods is, the film is nowhere near perfect. Human characters in this franchise just keep getting worse and worse as these films get pumped out. I honestly can't even remember the name of the main human character we are introduced to. The actors are fine and there isn't a performance I thought was horrible, but unfortunately, our characters are just used as exposition to explain the main beef between Godzilla and Kong. With that, the film is incredibly short for such a cinematic epic tale. At about one hour and fifty three minutes, the movie wastes absolutely no time in getting the ball rolling. Certain sequences happen where I thought to myself "Wait, how did they know that?" or "How in the world did that happen." While many films demand that you leave reality at the door and accept things that happen, some of these things were just so odd in the film.

In the end, if you are looking for a good popcorn flick that you can enjoy just watching, this is the movie for you. It's by no means perfect and some things about it are just so bad, but hey at least we got to see Godzilla and Kong actually fight a couple of times right? Oh, and it was super cool too.
